What is your favorite place for encountering God? Mine is the floor—any floor where others don’t walk, and where angels may tread. I find when I get as low as I can on earth, God gives me visions of heaven.

“Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you” (James 4:10). Whatever He shows you in that place of humility, be like Daniel, who “kept looking” (Dan. 7:2,4,6,7,9,11,13,21), and He will show you more.

Since 2011, I have set aside time at the end of my weekly sabbath day off to get down on the floor with God. I bring pen and pocket notepad with no personal agenda. I only want to witness whatever God wants to show me.

As soon as I hit the floor, I receive a vision or impression and start writing. I keep looking and exploring and writing what I see. After about an hour or so of wondrous transport, the visions and words end, and I come down for a landing. Then God fills me with a peace that passes comprehension. And I move on…

Until recently, I never went back to read those visions. They were sacred moments that blessed my soul beyond measure at those times. But I stored them away in index card boxes, and mostly forgot them. Perhaps I avoided them because I feared I would find them stale manna.

RETURN TO DIVINE ENCOUNTERS

But in April 2019 I was planning to go public with other writings. I wondered if I could salvage anything of value from what I had written on the floor. Finally, I opened an old index card box and took a peek at one of the visions.

All at once God carried me back and I experienced the whole divine encounter afresh. Afterwards, I hardly wanted to change a word, except to express more clearly in the now what I received back then.

Much the same happened with the other visions I reread. At times one vision got off to an unpromising start, only to surprise me with a sudden breeze of God’s grace which carried on through the rest of the vision.

These visions are not for everyone. Heavenly visions form one of the many branches of mysticism which have grown up through myriad human encounters with God. But perhaps mysticism in general—and heavenly visions in particular—puzzles you.

Mysticism means simply a personal, direct experience of the glory of God…
