A mystic is one who explores supernatural mysteries. A Christian mystic experiences those mysteries in the glory of Christ. The apostle Paul speaks of such a mystery. It “has now been manifested to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:26-27).

If you have been born again, Christ lives in you. But how much do you know the “riches of His glory”? The above Scripture says “God willed to make known” to you these riches. He has so many glorious riches in Christ that it will take eternity to find them out.

But you don’t have to wait until the next life to begin. Paul says this mystery “has now been manifested to His saints.” The mystery is “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

The mystery of Christ in you

You have Christ now. You will have the fullness of His glory later. But now you can begin to explore the riches of His glory.

How? By setting your own concerns aside and stilling your soul. By contemplating Christ for His own sake, not for yours.

I do it by getting on the floor and not rising until He has shown me all I can receive. You may do it over your Bible, in your prayer room, in worship dance, or in any position where you may fully receive from Him.

In truth, it doesn’t matter where. For “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”, and God gave you the Holy Spirit to glorify Christ (1 Cor. 6:19; John 16:13-14). You can seek Him and find Him and glorify Him wherever you are. For you yourself are the house of the Lord.

You need only to focus on this “one thing”: to behold and meditate on the beauty of the Lord.

“One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:

That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

To behold the beauty of the Lord

And to meditate in His temple” (Ps 27:4).

Meditation in Scripture

To seek, to behold, and to meditate on Christ are progressive stages of the “one thing”: giving full and undistracted attention to Him.

First, you seek for someone you have been missing. You behold someone you choose to direct your attention to. (“Behold “ in Hebrew is the verb form of chazon, or divine vision, according to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old Testament Words.)

Beyond beholding is meditation. To “meditate” (Hebrew baqar) in Psalm 27:4 means something far different than the self-emptying meditation of certain eastern religions. You meditate on the Lord by gazing at him “with pleasure and delight” (Vine’s Dictionary).

In essence, the mystic seeks the Christ he is missing. When he finds Him, he devotes his attention to Christ until he sees His glory. Then he gazes at Christ as long as he can with awe, pleasure and delight.

In my times on the floor, I begin with a small glimpse. I keep looking as He shows me more and more. Then I end with a revelation of His heavenly riches and beauty that I have never experienced before.
