VISIONS: Keep Looking, and Keep Seeing His Kingdom Come to Earth.
In Daniel chapter 7, Daniel has a dream in which he plays an active part in how the dream develops.
“In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed…” (7:1). To “see” a dream and visions implies that Daniel watched apart from the dream and visions. In fact in verse 2 Daniel says “I was looking in my [first] vision.” The plural “visions” likely mean that the visions formed parts of one dream.
We can see in Daniel 7 that the dream has distinct parts. Verses 2-7 concern four terrifying beasts. Despite their hideous features, Daniel says he “kept looking” three times to find out more about the beasts. Personally, I would rather wake up from such a nightmare.
Instead, in verse 8 Daniel “was contemplating the [ten] horns” of the fourth beast. One horn “with a mouth uttering great boasts” rises and uproots three of the horns.
In verses 9-10 he “kept looking” until he saw the Ancient of Days sit on His throne with multiple thousands of angels attending Him. A court sits with Him and opens certain books, probably of judgment.
In verses 11-12 Daniel “kept looking” and “kept looking” again until the beast was slain and the other three beasts lose their authority.
In verses 13-14, he again “kept looking” until the Ancient of Days gives the newly-arrived “son of man” everlasting authority over all peoples, nations and tongues, who worship Him.
Keep asking about what you see
Yet the visions “kept alarming” Daniel (verse 15). That may be why he kept looking, to see how the terror of the beasts would come to an end.
In verses 16-27, Daniel now “began asking”, and kept asking, “one of those who were standing by…[apparently angels] the exact meaning of all of this.” This guide explains that the four beasts stand for four successive kingdoms. Finally, the fourth will destroy the rest. His boastful horn will wage war against the saints and prevail until the heavenly court takes away his authority forever. Then “all the kingdoms under the whole heaven” will belong to the people of the saints of the Highest One, and He will reign forever.
Verse 28: “At this point the revelation ended. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were greatly alarming me and my face grew pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”
Daniel suffered through the horrors of an appalling dream. Yet he “kept looking” until he saw a final and victorious worldwide outcome. The more we keep looking, the more God will keep showing. And the more we will see His kingdom coming to all the earth, forever and ever. Amen.
